10 November 2015, Sweetcrude, Abuja – The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, has said its special task force has uncovered huge cases of electricity theft by its wealthy city customers using meters in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
The company’s Executive Director, Commercial Services, Engr. Ernest Mupwaya, who confirmed this through a statement signed by the Media Head, Ahmed Shekarau, revealed that many of those customers involved in the theft are high profile personalities resident in Abuja and environs.
According to the statement, “The task force discovered that many of these customers involved in such electricity theft are amongst the city’s elite who live in high profile parts of the city.”
Although Mupwaya did not disclose how much of revenue or capacity allocation the Disco loses to such theft, he however warned all customers engaged in such fraudulent activities to desist from doing that as the AEDC will soon launch “Operation Shame
Them” campaign to expose all those involved in the act.
He explained that AEDC would in a matter of days launch a campaign to ‘name and shame’ such individuals involved in the act. The AEDC, he noted, had also entered into partnership with the Nigerian Police to help stem cases of electricity theft within its coverage areas of Kogi, Niger, Abuja and Nasarawa.
“The agreement was reached at a meeting between the Inspector General of Police (IG) and the management of AEDC, led by its Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Neil Croucher. The Police IG who was represented at the meeting by the DIG (Logistics and Supply), Mr. Mamman Tsafe,” said AEDC.
