03 April 2017, Sweetcrude, Benin City – Officers of the 4 Brigade Command of the Nigerian Army destroyed over 300,000 litres of crude oil and refined petroleum products in an operation against an illegal refinery in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State.
The ‘refinery’ is located in Obazagbon area of the local government and its operators allegedly siphon crude oil from a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, broken pipeline.
During the military operation led by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier-General Ibrahim Garba, the team arrested two persons, including a woman who allegedly was at the illegal refinery with a truck-load of gallons to buy diesel and kerosene.
Operators of the illegal refinery reportedly abandoned the camp and fled as the soldiers struck.
The operation, however, led to the recovery of many storage tanks and pipes used for loading of the refined products on tankers.
