01 August 2017, Sweetcrude, Abuja – The Nigeria power sector lost N7.73 billion in seven days due to gas and water constraints, as power supply leapt to 3,221 megawatts per hour (MWh/h).

A report from the Advisory Power Team in the office of the Vice President in Abuja, yesterday, noted that, “On July 24 2017, average power sent out was 3,221 MWh/hour (up by 313 MWh/h). The reported gas constraint was 852MW. The reported line constraint was 76.5MW. The reported frequency management constraint due to loss of Disco feeders was 2110.5MW. The water management constraint was 0MW.

“The power sector lost an estimated N1,458,000,000 on July 24 2017 due to constraints. High frequency due to loss of Disco feeders remains a significant constraint to generation. Increased gas constraints at Omotosho I and II, Olorunsogo I, Alaoji NIPP and Geregu NIPP.”

The report also revealed that five power generating companies (Gencos) – Afam IV-V, A.E.S, ASCO, Rivers IPP, and Gbarain NIPP – produced zero MW during the period.

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has stated that it has successfully restored electricity supply to Birnin Gwari and Yauri in Kaduna, and Kebbi States respectively.

TCN said that, its 132kV Transmission Tower No. 183, between Tegina and Kontagora in Niger State, had collapsed at about 7.00am on Thursday, July 13, 2017, due to severe flash flood caused by heavy rainfall, which eroded the base of the transmission tower, despite remedial works carried out to fortify its foundation.
