01 November 2017, Sweetcrude, Port Harcourt – The Nigerian LNG Limited, NLNG, has said its proposed Train-7 project will reduce gas flaring in the country to the barest minimum, when it comes on stream.

NLNG’s General Manager, External Relations, Dr. Kudo Eresia-Eke, made this known at the fifth award presentation ceremony of NLNG post-graduate scholarship in Port Harcourt, where he also announced that the company has reduced gas flaring in Nigeria from 70 percent to 20 percent since its inception in 1999.

Eresia-Eke, who claimed that the NLNG was singularly responsible for taking Nigeria away from the chart of countries with highest rate of gas flaring in the world, disclosed that with its proposed Train-7 project, the company would buy more gas and reduce gas flaring in Nigeria to “a single digit and possibly zero”.

According to him, “When we started operations in Nigeria at about 1999, Nigeria was about one of the worst culprit in terms of gas flaring.

“So one of the main reasons the federal government felt compelled to establish this company along with its partners and shareholders was so that the company could help reduce gas flaring in Nigeria.

“So what NLNG does in addition to taking natural gas, is also to buy gas that ordinarily should have been flared.

“Today we have reduced so much flare in the country, and hopefully when our Train-Seven comes on stream, then we will buy more gas and reduce gas flaring in Nigeria to a single digit and possibly zero.”

Meanwhile, the company also disclosed that it has devoted the sum of N3 billion, which would go on annually for 25 years, for the development of its primary host community, Bonny island in Rivers State, into a mini-Dubai.
