15 December 2017, Sweetcrude, Lagos — The Federal Government is planning to deregulate the metering process, SweetcrudeReports has learnt.
According to information at our disposal, the plan is being worked out by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, and will take effect in 2018.
Tagged the Advanced Credit Advance Payment for Metering Implementation, Advanced CAPMI , the programme is geared towards the removal of regulations or restrictions (breaking the metering monopoly) presently enjoyed by the Distribution Companies, DisCos, and giving other independent metering manufacturers like Mojec, Ziklagsis and others the right to produce and sell meters.
What this means
Deregulating the metering process means that interested customers who cannot wait for their turn on their respective DisCos metering list, will have the freedom to purchase meters from any of the licensed manufacturers at competitive prices, while at the same time reducing the burden on the DisCos.
This also translates to the DisCos no longer going through the burden of importing meters, creating more market for Nigerian meter manufacturers to grow and expand.
It means more jobs too.
