31 January 2018, Sweetcrude, Lagos — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, is presently in a final consultation meeting with the Electricity Distribution Companies, DisCos, Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Company; and Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN over the Meter Asset Providers, MAP regulation.
The regulation is expected to bridge the wide metering gap in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, NESI, and bring about innovations in the process of metering electricity customers.
The meeting/training which is the result of the partnership between NERC, the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, NARUC, and US Agency for International Development that is in charge of training staff and other operators on distribution loss reduction and system planning in the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry, started yesterday.
Also in attendance are meter manufacturers; Nigeria Electricity Management Services; leasing and project finance companies among other stakeholders.
Resource persons led by Mr. Chris Thompson of NARUC were drawn from different states and cities of the United States and Georgia.
The meeting is expected to cover ways the industry operators and the regulator can take practical steps towards reducing non-technical (commercial and collection) losses on the electricity distribution network in Nigeria.
Participants are also expected to find ways to develop and implement long-term system planning that utilise the least cost and or best-fit principles
The Commission had last year, conducted consultations in seven locations on MAP and other regulations.
A final draft of the MAP regulation is expected at the end of the final consultation.
