13 June 2018, Sweetcrude, Lagos — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has granted Ariaria market in Aba, Abia State, a 9.5 megawatts embedded electricity generation and distribution license.
In a statement sent to SweetCrudeReports on Tuesday, the commission said the move was in pursuit of “overriding public interest”.
According to NERC, the generation license was granted to Ariaria Market Independent Power Plant Limited, while an Independent Electricity Distribution license to distribute same within Ariaria market was granted to Ariaria Independent Energy Distribution Network Limited.
The license, NERC explained, issued in line with Section 71 (6) of the Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act 2005, was granted after “careful” consideration of the applications in public interest to promote commercialisation and industrialisation for which Ariaria, a leading commercial hub in the country is reputed for.
The statement said both licenses granted Ariaria were affirmation of the commercialisation commitment in response to the long-time yearning of the market for stable, reliable and sustainable electricity supply to improve quality of goods and services by Nigerian entrepreneurs.
