Abuja — The new president of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Mr. Quadri Olaleye, has sought the cooperation of workers and Nigerians “to achieve a country everyone would be proud of”.

Olaleye of the Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association, FOBTOB, replaces Bobboi Kaigama, who served as TUC president for two terms from 2013 to 2019.

The new president emerged after a consensus was reached at the end of the 11th Triennial Delegates Conference of the congress in Abuja.

While promising to speak the truth to government at all levels, Olaleye sought for cooperation and contribution of everyone to build a labour movement for posterity.

He assured the union that he would dedicate himself to ensure that the challenges workers face were confronted headlong.

The new president paid glowing tribute to late Olabode Johnson, the late president of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, who was tipped to emerge president of the TUC, but for his sudden death on May 31 at the Abuja National Hospital. Olaleye pledged that Johnson’s struggle would not be in vein.

Also elected are Muhammed Yunusa of Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations, Government Owned Companies, SSASSCGOC, as elected National Treasurer; Isaac Egbugara of Construction and Civil Engineering Senior Staff Association, CCESSA (Financial Secretary), among others.
