Lagos — Ikeja Electric has said it will not be a party to offering its customers free electricity as a parliative measure during the COVID19 pandemic lockdown.
The National Assembly in a bill still being debated proposed two months free electricity supply for Nigerians during the sit-at-home.
The DisCo’s stand came following a statement signed by an umbrella body for all DisCos, ANED on Thursday, said it consented to offering its customers free electricity.
However, Ikeja Electric Plc said such gesture is not visible at the moment and have asked its customers to continue to pay their utility bills as at when due.
The Management,Ikeja Electric Plc in a statement on Thursday said though it fully supports the ongoing efforts of the National Assembly, in collaboration with the Federal Government, to consider a proposal on the possibility of providing free electricity for two months as part of Covid-19 palliative for customers.
‘However, it is important to point out that at the moment, it is only a proposal and is still undergoing stakeholder reviews on its feasibility. It has not been approved by the Government as a stimulus package or palliative.”
‘As such, the ability of the DisCos to implement this proposed palliative is subject to the stimulus package being passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by Mr. President.’
