Lagos — Ten plants have suffered gas shortages leading to a drop in power generation below 3000megawatts, according to the Nigerian Electricity System Operator.

The plants involved in the downtime were Egbin Power, Omotosho, Olorunsogo, Geregu, Sapele, Olorunsogo II, Omotosho II, Ihovbor, Omoku and Rivers IPP.

Power generation on Friday dropped to 2,995.2MW as of 6am from 3,613.3MW the previous day.

The system operator put the nation’s installed generation capacity at 12,910.40MW; available capacity at 7,652.60MW; transmission wheeling capacity at 8,100MW; and the peak generation ever attained at 5,375MW.

Power generation of 3000megawatts is megre to cater for Nigeria’s over 200 million population, as experts have said the country requires generation of over 30 megawatts to reach sufficiency.

Although power generation firms had achieved 5, 375MW in the past, however, production have remained below 5000MW in recent years.

Nigeria has more of gas powered generating plants, and twenty five of them had recently complained about failure of the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (government-owned) to pay them a total of N181.39bn from January to April this year.
