Port Harcourt — The Federal Government has been urged to reduced its over-reliance on crude oil as the mainstay of the country’s economy, especially since the world was moving fast towards alternative energy sources.
The chairman, Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Senator Hassan Mohammed Gusau, said this while speaking to our correspondent in Port Harcourt.
Gusau expressed fears that in the next one decade, oil would become irrelevant due to absence of buyers, as the world embraces renewable energy sources.
He urged the Federal Government to move with the train, by starting now to invest in renewable energy, as not to be left behind.

“On the issue of oil, we are not supposed to be overtly depending on oil, because by 2030, the buyers will not be there.

“Even now cars are being driven without oil, so we must plan before the time.”
The lawmaker also advocated for more opportunities for youths from the Niger Delta, while tasking NDDC to ensure  that empowerment trickles down to the ordinary people in the region.
“Opportunities must be provided for Niger Delta youths, the common man is not benefiting from oil and that can only be solved by creating job opportunities and promote NDDC to provide basic amenities to the region, shelter, roads etc.”
