We spend N1.7bn yearly on power generation – NBC

Lagos — The Nigerian Bottling Company Plc, NBC – bottlers of the Coca-Cola brands in Nigeria – says it spends an average of N1.7 billion yearly to generate 25.5MW of power from its six combined heat and power, CHP, plants located in five of its eight manufacturing plants in the country.

NBC’s managing director, Matthieu Seguin, revealed this during a media tour of one of its plants located in Ikeja, Lagos State.

Mattieu said the company’s eight manufacturing plants located in different parts of the country have reduced carbon dioxide, Co2, emissions by 3,600tons and saved over 167,000 trees.

“Today, we have 6 CHP plants in 5 of our 8 manufacturing plants, including Port-Harcourt, Ikeja, Benin, Owerri and Asjire plants, all resulting in a significant reduction of our carbon emission across the country. Overall, the 6CHP plants generate 25,5MW of power, delivering 125,267MWh of electrical energy, including 68,267MWh as steam energy as a by-product, which without the CHP would have been produced with fossil fuel.

“The amount of energy generated by our CHP plants is capable of powering standard 3 bedroom homes,” he said.

He also revealed other initiatives deployed by the company, saying: “We have embarked on fleet conversion to CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) trucks. Already, we have introduced 10 CNG trucks to our fleets, which are already delivering cumulative Co2 emissions, saving us 17 tons every month.  Our problem in this area is availability of CNG stations in Nigeria, which limits the acceleration of the numbers of these vehicles in our fleets.”

Matthieu added: “We have also started transitioning our diesel-powered forklifts to models which are powered by electricity, contributing further to our Co2 emission savings as a business. So far, 109 forklifts have been transitioned, with plans for all 300 forklifts used in the business to be transitioned by the end of the year, 2022.

“Across the Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company (CCHBC), we are committed to achieving a net zero emission by the end of 2040; we are pleased that already we are working our way towards achieving this in NBC. By constantly retooling our production processes, adopting global best practices and leveraging new technologies to optimize our operations, NBC aims to continue taking leads as the champion of Sustainability manufacturing in Nigeria.”
