Lagos — The US is set to register the highest ammonia capacity additions in North America, contributing about 84% of the region’s capacity additions by 2027, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, “Ammonia Industry Installed Capacity and Capital Expenditure (CapEx) Forecast by Region and Countries including details of All Active Plants, Planned and Anunced Projects, 2023-2027,” reveals that the US leads with the largest ammonia capacity additions in the North American region, with a capacity of 14.96 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) from six planned and five announced projects. Increased use of ammonia as a fertilizer in the agriculture industry for improved crop productivity is expected to lead to an increase in demand for ammonia in the US.

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, Comments: “In the US, the main capacity addition would be from an announced project, Ascension Clean Energy Donaldsonville Ammonia Plant with a capacity of 7.2 mtpa. The project is expected to commence production of ammonia in 2027.”

CF Industries and Mitsui Ascension Parish Ammonia Plant follows next with capacity addition of 1.7 mtpa. The plant is expected to start operations in 2027.
