Port Harcourt — In a bid to harness its vast solid mineral resources and combat illegal mining, Cross River State has announced plans to establish its own mining company.
Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, who announced this, said the state has applied for a license to operate a limited liability company, marking a significant step towards joining other states in the mining sector.
Governor Otu speaking during a meeting with the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, in Abuja, stressed the importance of partnering with the Ministry to combat illegal mining activities.
With the establishment of its own mining company, the governor said Cross River State’s entry into the industry is expected to attract investors, generate revenue, create jobs and put Cross River on the map as a major mining destination.
“We needed to come and look at the laws and regulations guiding proper mining processes.
This will help us make informed decisions in collaboration with the federal government to clean up the mining sector.
“We are also exploring Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to tap into our vast solid mineral potential,” Governor Otu announced.
Also, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, pledged the federal government support for the state’s initiative, promising to provide necessary guidance and regulations to ensure proper mining processes.
Alake stated that the visit exemplifies the renewed spirit of cooperation between the federal government and states in harnessing the nation’s mineral resources towards fostering economic development.
“The governor’s visit is a clear example of the collaboration we are aiming for between the federal government and sub-national authorities. Our goal is to sanitise the mining sector, secure mining areas, and create a conducive environment for investors.”
