Data obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, showed that the price jumped from N4,562.51 in October 2023 to N6,915.69 in October 2024.
The trend of rising costs continued on a monthly basis, with a 3.23% increase from N6,699.63 in September 2024.
In parallel, the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder saw an even steeper year-on-year climb of 58.68%, from N10,545.87 in October 2023 to N16,734.55 in October 2024, marking a 2.58% increase from September 2024.
State-wise analysis showed significant price disparities, with Borno State recording the highest price for a 5kg cylinder at N7,939.29, while Katsina Stats had the lowest at N6,270.00.
For the 12.5kg cylinder, Rivers State topped the list at N17,895.00, while Katsina Stats again recorded the lowest at N14,725.00.
Regional breakdowns revealed that the North-East had the highest average price for the 5kg cylinder, at N7,319.03, while the South-South region saw the highest price for the 12.5kg cylinder at N17,114.67.
The continuous surge in cooking gas prices highlights growing financial challenges for Nigerian households, with many already feeling the strain of increased living costs.
