NMDPRA denies halting gas supply to GENCOs

Port Harcourt — The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, has dismissed claims that it directed gas suppliers to halt supply to power generating companies, GENCOs, over unpaid obligations.

In a statement, the Authority described the claims as “false and completely unfounded,” stressing that they have no connection to the discussions held during a recent stakeholders’ engagement in Lagos.

The NMDPRA clarified that the engagement, which involved representatives of the Oil Producers Trade Section, OPTS, the Independent Petroleum Producers Group, IPPG, and other stakeholders, was convened to educate participants on the implementation of the wholesale supply license as provided by Sections 142 and 197 of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021.

According to the Authority, the Lagos session was a follow-up to an earlier engagement held at its corporate headquarters in Abuja on November 27, 2024.

“The Authority wishes to reassure all our stakeholders and the general public that at no time was the false statement made at that event or anywhere else,” the statement read.

It further emphasized that efforts are being made to ensure the seamless supply and distribution of natural gas and petroleum products to end users, particularly as the festive season approaches and into 2025.

The Authority urged the public to disregard the publication and described the claims as baseless, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining uninterrupted supply across the value chain.
