Port Harcourt — In a move to curb the rising number of boat mishaps across Nigeria, the Federal Government has inaugurated a Special Committee on the Prevention of Boat Mishaps, signaling a potential overhaul of inland waterway operations.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who inaugurated the committee, emphasized the urgent need to enhance safety regulations, vessel maintenance, and enforcement of operational standards to prevent recurring tragedies.
“Our waterways are lifelines that connect communities and drive economic growth. However, the frequent tragic boat mishaps across the country have posed significant challenges, resulting in loss of lives and properties. This situation demands urgent intervention,” Oyetola stated.
He revealed that the committee’s primary mandate is to conduct a comprehensive review of commercial boat operations, identify the root causes of accidents, and propose sustainable safety measures, an initiative which aligns with the 2024 International World Maritime Day theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First.”
The committee, chaired by the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, Bola Oyebamiji, consists of representatives from key stakeholder groups, including state governments, safety experts, boat owners, operators, and marine engineers.
Oyetola assured the public that the government is committed to strengthening regulatory frameworks and enhancing enforcement mechanisms to ensure safety compliance among boat operators.
“This is not just another committee; it is a proactive step toward ensuring that Nigerians who rely on water transport can do so safely. We will not hesitate to enforce stricter regulations where necessary,” he declared.
Responding, the Committee Chairman, Bola Oyebamiji, commended the Minister for his proactive leadership in tackling challenges in the maritime sector and assured Nigerians of effective policy recommendations that will prioritize safety.
“Since your appointment, Sir, you have never relented in your struggle for a better maritime sector. We assure you that the confidence reposed in this committee will not be betrayed,” he stated.
“On behalf of the members of this Committee and the Management of the National Inland Waterways Authority, I wish to sincerely salute your doggedness and proactiveness in providing effective leadership for this sector,” Oyebamiji said.
“I assure you that the confidence reposed in this Committee will not be betrayed.”
The newly inaugurated committee is expected to submit its safety review and recommendations within a set timeframe, paving the way for stronger enforcement policies to curb accidents and improve Nigeria’s inland waterway transport system.
