Lagos — To improve navigational safety for all water users, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has installed water buoys from Gbajibo in Niger State to Gbajibo-Mundi in Kwara State.

In a statement signed by Mr. Suleiman Nakama, Assistant General Manager. Corporate Affairs department of NIWA, said that the number of buoys used were 10 red colour and 6 green colour.

Nakama stated that the river is generally deep with the least depth of 21.3m. adding that the Authority is taking this proactive step towards safeguarding our waterways.

He said: “These buoys serve as critical markers, indicating safe Navigation channels, warning of hazards and designating protected areas.”

Recalled during the 2025 Management retreat, the Managing Director/CEO Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, emphasized on safety regulations and improve operational efficiency across the Nation’s Inland Waterways.

Furthermore, the agency has recently been overwhelmed with reports of multiple waterway accidents nationwide, a troubling trend that has led to the loss of many Nigerian lives.
