01 January 2014, Lagos – Addax Petroleum Development Company has reiterated its determination to promote and support Nigerian human content development by increasing the general awareness of the oil and gas industry and strengthening the academic and moral performance of students in targeted secondary and tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
Speaking during a recent launching of “Run/Walk for a Child,” an initiative of Addax Petroleum Volunteers Club (APVC), the Chairman of the company, Mr. Xinmin Wu said the objective of the programme was in line with the goals of Addax Petroleum Foundation, which is aimed at fighting poverty and inequality caused by lack of education, illness, isolation and indigent living conditions.
“This Foundation is working with other non-governmental organisations for this purpose. Just like the famous Chinese proverb, which says, ‘give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a life time,’ the APVC initiative is commendable as it aims at assisting the Nigerian child to achieve his or her future aspirations,” he said.
Wu noted that Addax Petroleum would continue to provide the necessary support to enable the APVC sustain this drive.
APVC is a voluntary club drawn from Addax Petroleum workforce, whose objective is to promote and support Nigerian human content capacity development through active participation in the initiative, development and implementation of events and programmes that will increase general awareness of the oil and gas industry and boost the academic and moral performance of students.
The initiative tagged “Run/Walk for a Child” is aimed at raising funds to improve academic performance of children in secondary schools.
The programme is planned to be an annual event to be targeted at secondary schools in the company’s area of operations.
According to the organisers, the plan is for the APVC to partner with associations like Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) to provide focused extramural and revision classes to students about to write their Senior School Certificate Examinations (pre-university).
“With this initiative, we believe there will be a measurable improvement in the performance of these students and hopefully, this sets them up to also perform well in the university and life in general,” said the organisers.
