Lagos — Asia is likely to be the only region in the world to witness polycarbonate capacity additions during 2024 to 2028 from 11 new-build and expansion projects, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.
GlobalData’s latest report, “Polycarbonate Industry Outlook by Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of All Active and Planned Plants to 2028,” reveals that the total polycarbonate capacity in Asia from new-build and expansion projects is expected to be 2.05 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) by 2028. The region is expected to witness a capacity addition of 1.90 mtpa from eight planned, new build projects, and a capacity of 0.15 mtpa from three planned, expansion projects.
Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “High demand of polycarbonate in sectors such as packaging, automotive, and construction in countries such as China is a key driver for the growth of the polycarbonate capacity additions in Asia.”
China and India are the only countries in Asia to witness polycarbonate capacity additions by 2028. The main capacity additions in China will be from SABIC Fujian Petrochemical Zhangzhou Polycarbonate Plant with a capacity of 0.29 mtpa. The plant is currently under construction and is expected to commence production of polycarbonate in 2026.
Rongsheng New Materials (Taizhou) Co Ltd is planning to develop two plants in Taizhou, each with a capacity of 0.26 mtpa. These two plants are also likely to start operations in 2026.
Roy concludes: “In India, the entire capacity contribution will be from Nayara Energy Vadinar Polycarbonate Plant, located in the state of Gujarat. It is expected to come online in 2028 with a capacity of 0.13 mtpa. Nayara Energy Ltd is the operator of the plant with a 100% stake.”
