29 November 2011, Sweetcrude, Dakar – Australian firm, African Petroleum, has been awarded exploration rights covering two blocks off the coast of Senegal.
The agreement was signed between the company, the government and state-run company, Petrosen, for two exploration permits covering the Rufisque Offshore Profond and Senegal Offshore Sud Profond Blocks.
African Petroleum will, under the agreements, be operator and hold a 90% stake in both blocks which cover a combined area of 18,277 square kilometres.
Its exploration programme will target deep-water Upper Cretaceous sub-marine fans which it said were considered to have “similar high impact potential” to the Jubilee field, off Ghana, and the Mercury discovery, off Sierra Leone.
