Lagos — Axxela Limited, a leading sub-Saharan African gas and power portfolio company, has officially handed over the newly refurbished Elegbata Sports Complex to Lagos State Sports Commission. The upgraded facility provides a safe and modern space for aspiring athletes and sports enthusiasts within the Lagos Island community.
Axxela first reconstructed the facility in March 2019 and has now undertaken an upgrade to create a more dynamic and inclusive environment for sports enthusiasts. The refurbishment supports Lagos State’s sports development agenda, offering young people an enhanced facility to nurture their talents and engage in extracurricular activities.
Speaking at the brief handover ceremony, Kehinde Alabi, Managing Director of Axxela Gas Distribution, reiterated the company’s commitment to community development through targeted intervention that creates lasting value for its host communities.
“At Axxela, we are committed to empowering our communities and fostering sustainable development, particularly for their youth. This project aligns with our vision of creating a lasting impact in our host communities. Beyond this initiative, we continue to invest in education through scholarships, provision of infrastructure, and other intervention programmes”, he said.
The upgraded astroturf will enhance durability and year-round usability, while the multi-purpose sports court, revamped to accommodate various sporting and recreational activities, ensures athletes have access to training for both personal development and tournament preparation.
The expanded seating and improved viewing stands provide a more immersive experience for spectators. The state-of-the-art flood lighting extends playtime by enabling evening activities. These improvements not only offer a better sporting facility but significantly support talent development, ensuring that young athletes have the resources to train, compete, and be productively engaged.
Through initiatives spanning healthcare, safety, education, environmental sustainability, and community development, Axxela continues to reinforce its role as a responsible corporate citizen committed to improving lives and uplifting society.
