*2 killed 2 in Ekeowe waterways
12 January 2014, Yenagoa – Armed sea pirates on Friday attacked a passenger boat along the Ekeowe waterways in Southern Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa and killing two.
Ekeowe community hosts the newly established federal polytechnic and the incident follows several other kidnapping in the new year in Bayelsa State.
Witnesses say the boat was attacked as it approached Ekeowe town.
The attack which occurred in the early hours of Friday morning lasted for about 35 minutes with the attackers making away with the remains of their victims in a separate boat.
One of those who survived the attack told Saharareporters, an online news medium: “At about 7am, sea pirates attacked travelers near Ekeowe end of Southern Ijaw Local Government area and made away with huge cash and corpses of two passengers.”
According to him, while the attack was ongoing, passenger boats that passed by sent distress calls to soldiers of the Joint Task Force guarding oil facilities at the Peremabiri and Olugbobiri areas but they failed to come to the aid of the victims.
Spokesman for the Bayelsa Police Command, Alex Akhigbe could not be reached for comments at the tim eof filing this report.
However Police Sources confirmed that a signal was received on some pirate attack along the water ways.
