Port Harcourt — Bonny National Grammar School has emerged the winner of 2022 Nigeria LNG Limited’s 2022 science quiz competition for public secondary schools in Rivers State.
Bonny National Grammar School bear six other secondary schools to clinch the grand prize with a total of 68,541 points, while Enitonna High School, and Niger Delta Science School clinched second and third positions with 57,777 and 55,733 points respectively.
Speaking, the General Manager External Relations and Sustainable Development, Mr Andy Odeh, assured that NLNG CSR initiatives will continue to invest in the educational value chain to support aspirations of young Nigerians
Odeh explained that the goal of the competition was to inspire healthy competition as well as interest in science and technology to equip young minds for nation building and for the good of mankind.
“NLNG is consistently looking towards the future and is harnessing prospects towards that sustainable outlook. Hence, the thrust of NLNG’s CSR framework gives focus to development of health, education, empowerment, and infrastructure t for the benefit of the general society, particularly its host communities.
“As part of its education interventions, NLNG has partnered with the Rivers State Ministry of Education to organize annual science quizzes, debates and essay competitions for students in public schools.
“The goal is to inspire healthy competition as well as interest in science and technology to equip young minds for nation building and for the good of mankind.
“By way of mention, we have instituted the University Support Programme, Renovation of Host Communities’ schools’ projects, as well as the building and equipping of libraries and science laboratories. Annually, NLNG awards scholarships at the post primary school level, undergraduate scholarships and the post graduate scholarships.”
Also speaking, Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Prof Chinedu Mmom, urged other multinationals to emulate NLNG in promoting science education in the state and the country at large.
“We can’t develop if we don’t invest in education, science and technology. The world is moving ahead, we can’t afford to lag behind. So Nigeria must buy into the global trend of science education, that’s why I keep giving kudos to NLNG.
“And I urge other corporate organizations to key into this project, so we can develop even our own indigenous technology. It is high time we develop ours instead of depending on western technology. That is my call and advice.”
Speaking on behalf of the students, Master Igwe Nazareth of Bonny National Grammar School, commended NLNG for sponsoring the competition.
“I read at night. I read everyday, I ask questions. I didn’t do it on my own. It’s God that helped me.”
