
Lagos — Nigeria’s independent producer, Britannia-U Nigeria Limited, says the massive fire at its 4,000 barrels of crude oil per day capacity Brittania -U Floating Production Storage and Offloading, FPSO, facility is now under control.
“Brittania -U wishes to update the general public that the fire incident which occurred on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at its Floating Production Storage and Offloading Facility (FPSO) situated at the former OML 90 field, now PML 6, offshore Ogulagha Kingdom offshore Warri, is now under control,” a statement by Uju Ifejika, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the company read,
Although the cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained, a viral video by rescue workers had shown trapped personnel on the FPSO shouting for help while others jumped into the open water, swimming for their lives.
The oilfield began production in January 2010, with the operator Britannia-U selling directly to Chevron, which transports the crude oil by shuttle barge to Escravos export terminal.
The National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, first confirmed the fire. Its Zonal Director, Port Harcourt Zone, Mr Imeh Ekanem, confirmed the fire, but, did not give further details on the incident.
