01 February 2016, Asaba — GENERAL Manager for Policy Government and Public Affairs, Chevron Nigeria Limited, Mr. Deji Haastrup, has reiterated the commitment of Chevron to improve the standard of education in the country through annual national and community scholarship programmes.

He called for part of the funds provided by the Chevron/NNPC joint ventures to the Regional Development Committees, RDCs, under the company’s Global Memorandum of Understanding, GMoU, in the communities to be channelled to education.

Haastrup, who spoke at the 2016 Award/Prize Giving Ceremony of the Chris Ikomi Memorial Essay Competition sponsored by Chevron/NNPC joint venture in partnership with the Delta State Government for Junior and Senior Secondary School categories, said that education was one of the core areas of social performance, adding that government alone cannot bear the burden of providing quality education for Nigerian youths.

Represented at the event by a Senior Staff of the company, Mr. Esimage Brikinn, Haastrup commended winners of the competition for their excellent performance and enjoined them to see their prizes as the beginning of higher challenges to excel both in academics and other life endeavours.

Also speaking, Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, commended the Chevron/NNPC Joint Venture for partnering the state government in developing the education sector.

He said, “This competition is aimed at immortalizing late Mr. Chris Ikomi, a very dedicated staff who was murdered during the Warri ethnic crises in 1999.”
