US supermajor Chevron said today that it expects to start drilling its first deep-water well off the coast of Liberia in the fourth quarter of this year in its three deep-water concessions.

The Liberian government last year approved its investment in the blocs off the West African country’s coast, giving it a 70% interest in deep-water blocks LB-11, LB-12 and LB-14, 12 to 110 miles south of Liberia’s capital, Monrovia.

“We recently secured the drillship and expect to begin drilling Chevron’s first deep-water exploration well in the fourth quarter of this year,” Chevron chief executive John Watson said in a statement, Reuters reported.

“If our exploration programme is successful, we look forward to working with you to bring Liberia’s resources to the world energy market,” he added.
