04 October 2013, Lagos – Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, – operator of the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture, says the final of the 2013 Junior Masters Tennis Tournament, will hold on October 6, 2013, at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos.
The championship, which commenced on September 30, 2013, is sponsored by NNPC/Chevron JV in collaboration with the Nigerian Tennis Federation and Prime Sports International Limited. It is part of the JV’s commitment to promoting youth and sports development in Nigeria.
The objective of the Junior Masters Tennis Tournament and Junior Tennis Summer Coaching Clinic- held earlier in the year, is to engage the youths, particularly during the holiday period to develop their tennis skills and to afford them an opportunity to participate in tennis events. The program targets mostly the less privileged, but is open to young persons of all social cadres.
According to the General Manager, Policy Government and Public Affairs, “The NNPC /Chevron JV Tennis tournament is designed to foster the spirit of healthy competition and sportsmanship amongst target youths, build capacity and develop skillful tennis players that would be able to earn sustainable living from tennis and bring glory to Nigeria.”
In addition to the Junior Masters Tennis tournament, NNPC/Chevron JV also pioneered an annual Junior Tennis Summer Coaching Clinic. This clinic benefits more than 100 boys and girls, between the ages of eight and fourteen years annually. The youngsters who qualify at the end of the Clinic are selected to represent LagosState in the NNPC/Chevron Junior Tennis Masters Tournament.
Guests expected at the occasion include the Honorable Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi; the First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola; President, Nigeria Tennis Federation, NTF, Engr. Sani Ndanusa; Group General Manager of NAPIMS (GGM), Engr. Chinaka Mac Nwogu; Senior representatives of NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture Management, as well as teachers and students.
