Port Harcourt — The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has raised an alarm over growing concerns from the United States government regarding the misuse of American entry visas by Nigerian travelers, warning that the trend could expose the country to expanded U.S. visa sanctions and heightened scrutiny for business travellers.

According to a statement issued by the National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Dr. Abdullahi Maiwada, the US authorities have expressed disapproval over the rising number of Nigerian visa holders engaging in activities inconsistent with their visa classifications.

“Security vetting for visa applicants does not end upon entry into the United States. U.S. authorities will continuously monitor visa holders, and violations of immigration protocols or other U.S. laws can result in visa revocation,” Dr. Maiwada said.

The Customs spokesperson emphasized that Nigerians traveling to the U.S. for legitimate business, education, or tourism must adhere strictly to the conditions of their visas to avoid legal and diplomatic consequences.

Beyond visa misuse, the NCS also warned that failure to declare excess cash at exit or entry points, as well as the carriage of prohibited items, could trigger additional sanctions from U.S. immigration and customs authorities.

“Travelers are reminded to declare any cash above $10,000 or its equivalent and ensure that their baggage does not include prohibited goods. Fraud in any jurisdiction will attract legal consequences under both U.S. and Nigerian laws,” the statement added.

Of particular concern, according to the agency, is the possibility of Nigeria being added to a revised list of countries facing U.S. travel restrictions, a move that would adversely affect law-abiding Nigerians seeking to enter the U.S. for business or education.

“The Nigeria Customs Service is working closely with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria does not get enlisted into any expanded visa ban regime that could obstruct well-meaning Nigerians from traveling to the U.S. for their lawful business endeavours,” Dr. Maiwada stated.

He urged all outbound travelers to conduct themselves in accordance with the law and warned that misconduct abroad may result in reputational damage and loss of international travel privileges for Nigerian citizens.

The alert comes amid growing scrutiny of visa compliance globally, and stakeholders say it underscores the need for Nigerian travelers, especially business professionals and students, to fully understand and respect the terms of their U.S. visas.
