25 April 2014, Abuja – The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has dissociated itself from a statement credited to it against the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke.
National President of NANS, Yinka Gbadebo, reacting to the statement, allegedly written a former executive member of the student body,Comrade John Shima..
He decried what he termed as ‘series of attacks against the minister’ saying Nigerians must disregard any allegations made against the minister.
Gbedebo also urged Nigerians not to always assume that every government official is corrupt. He said harbouring such a belief against public officials is not healthy for the nation.
“Not all government officials are corrupt,” he said. “We must change the way we see people in government. There are a lot of government officials in this country that are doing their best to make the country a better place. We should not be too hasty in judging public officials.”
While maintaining that the Petroleum Minister has introduced policies that have revolutionised the petroleum industry, by citing the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), the gas projects and many other laudable projects under the leadership of Allison-Madueke, Gbadebo said it takes time for people to begin to appreciate good policies of government.
“The point is we can see improvement in the oil and gas sector since her appointment. The incessant problem of fuel scarcity have been abated, except for the artificial scarcity been created by political saboteurs,” Gbadebo further stated.
Commenting specifically on the reports published in one of the national dailies against the Minister, Gbadebo said: “I am appalled by a report in a national newspaper by an expelled former deputy Senate President of NANS. I blame a section of the public for promoting fraudsters and those who go about in the name of NANS to defraud the general public.
“Anybody who relates with Shima, the expelled former deputy Senate President of NANS does so at his or her own risk as he was never at any time in history the Senate President of NANS.
“Shima was impeached and expelled from the organisation last year at NANS Senate meeting held at the University of Port Harcourt for fraudulent activities and acts of gross misconduct in the name of NANS.”
