21 March 2016, Sweetcrude, Uyo – Youths of Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom are up in arms against multinational oil company, ExxonMobil, over non-payment of oil spill palliative meant for Eket since 2011.
As part of this, the youths recently disrupted activities at ExxonMobil facilities in Eket, Akwa Ibom State.
The youths took their demonstration to the Mobil airstrip and housing estate facilities of the oil major,
They barricaded the gates at the airstrip and the housing estate, leaving workers of the oil giants loitering around the gates as they were denied entry into the facilities.
“ExxonMobil release our Money”, “Regina Udobong please our money”, “ExxonMobil enough is enough”, “Ibeno, Esit Eket and Onna have been paid, why Eket?, “We will not leave until our money is paid,’’ read some of the placards carried by the demonstrators.
According to Mr. Godwin Nduaesa, the youths leader of Eket, said: “The blocking of Mobil has become necessary because the three core oil communities of Ibeno, Onna and Esit Eket have since 2015 being paid leaving out Eket without explanation.
“The youths are going to remain here until the money is released for Eket community”.
