23 January 2018, Sweetcrude, Lagos — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, is looking at attracting investors to fund the metering process.
In a tweet by the commission through its Twitter account on Tuesday, NERC said it is working on a regulation that will allow meter asset providers participate in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, NESI.
“@nerc.gov.ng is working on a regulation to bring in Meter Assets Providers to fund provisions of meters
in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI)”.
According to the statement, the move will allow a creative regulatory initiative which is expected to bridge the metering gap in NESI.
The electricity distribution companies, DisCos, have consistently complained about their inability to fund the metering process, thereby creating a gap in the distribution of meters to consumers.
This drew this attention of stakeholders, including the federal government, prompting the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, to declare in December, that the burden of metering would be lifted off the necks of the DisCos.
Also, the federal government earlier in the year said it would revive its abandoned investment in metering in order to speed up the process.
