Port Harcourt — The fire incident at two oil wells in Akaso field operated by an indigenous oil firm, Eroton Exploration and Production Limited, has been partially contained, five days after.
Recall that an uncontrollable flow of hydrocarbons with wildfire began on Saturday, October 1, 2022 from two oil wells, AKOS004L/S and AKOS014L/S, within Akaso field in Akuku Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
While the fire at Akaso Wells 14 and 4T wellhead has been put out, the fire at the second well, Akaso Well 4 is still raging at the time of filing this report.
In an update on the situation of the fire incident, the Director-General of the National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, Mr Idris Musa, said containment of the fire incident was ongoing.
“The fire at Akaso Wells 14 and 4T wellhead has been put out, however, the fire at the second well, Akaso Well 4 is still burning,” Musa said.
Musa had disclosed that following the notification of the incident to the Agency, the company, officials of the spills agency alongside the oil firm’s emergency response team were immediately mobilised to the site.
“The company has mobilised a vendor, which is expected to arrive the incident location today, October 4th 2022, to extinguish the raging fire from the Wells; the Agency will supervise the activity accordingly.
“An illeal boat was observed at the location, which was suspected to be engaged in oil theft. The boat has been completely burnt but the fire on the boat has been extinguished.
“The two wells are however, still on fire until the vendor arrives to extinguis it,” he said.
