17 July 2015, Dutse – Mr Aliyu Umar, the Managing Director of Jigawa Small Towns Water Supply Agency (STOWA), said the European Union (EU) had concluded plans to provide 25 towns in the state with solar-powered water facilities.

Umar disclosed this to journalist, shortly after meeting with members of Water Consumer Associations (WSAs) on Thursday in Dutse.

He said that the project would be executed under the EU’s Water Supply Sanitation Sector Reform Programme (WSSSR).

He explained that the project would be executed by the EU, in collaboration with Small Towns Water Supply (STOWA) and Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in the state.

According to him, 10 towns in Taura and 15 towns in Malam-Madori Local Government areas will benefit from the project.

He said that the EU would provide 70 per cent of the funding, while the state and the benefiting local government areas would jointly provide 25 per cent of the cost.

The managing director further said that the benefiting communities would provide the remaining 5 per cent of the funding.

He added that the projects, when completed, would be handed over to Water Consumers Associations (WCAs) in each of the benefiting communities, for maintenance.

Umar said that STOWA had provided 214 solar-powered and 329 motorized water facilities across the 27 local government areas of the state. –
