26 October 2012, Sweetcrude, Enugu – A foreign-based energy Company, Green Phoenic, plans to revive coal utilisation in country with the construction of a $1.5 billion Coal fired Power Plant in Enugu, South East Nigeria.

Brian Ransom, the Chief executive officer of the company made the disclosure during a courtesy call on the acting Governor of Enugu state, Sunday Onyebuchi.

He further disclosed that the power plant, on completion, would be able to generate 200 megawatts of electricity.

Ransom said his Company had interest in other development projects, such as water treatment and food preservation – all of which had the potentials of generating employment and bolstering the economy of the state, adding that the company’s operations were projected to last for about 30 years in Nigeria.

The chief executive officer also indicated that his company intends to visit communities in the state, to identify their problems and needs and disclosed that it had already visited other places in Nigeria, such as Lagos.

Responding, the acting governor said that government had provided necessary facilities to woo investors to Enugu state, pointing out that Enugu had played major roles in the socio-economic development of the country as the capital of the old Eastern Region, right from the time coal was discovered in it, up to the arrival of the United African Company (UAC).

He assured the company boss of the hardworking and enterprising nature of the people of the state, who would be enganged by the company, noting that the state would provide a very conducive environment for the company as it had always done for all visitors, including Europeans in the past.

Onyebuchi emphasized that, besides good governance, the state had good roads, hospitals, adequate security and a lot more, to help investments thrive.
