The four men were working for Parma-based firm Bonatti when they were taken from a site near the Mellitah Oil & Gas compound, Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.
The ministry did not say when the men were snatched, but a statement sent to Upstream from Bonatti said they were abducted on Sunday.
“On July 19, four Italian specialists who are employees at Bonatti company have been kidnapped in Libya nearby Mellitah complex,” the construction firm said.
“At the moment, we are in contact and strictly co-ordinating with the authorities and crisis unit of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”
A statement from the ministry read: “The crisis unit began monitoring the case immediately and remains in continuous contact with the families of the four Italian national and the Bonatti company.
“As is known, citing the country’s extremely precarious situation, following the closure of the Embassy of Italy in Libya on 15 February the (Ministry) urged all Italian nationals to leave Libya.”
