Lagos — Crisis is unfolding at the Lagos ports as customs brokers, also known as freight forwarders, under various associations, staged a protest at Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) over a hike in shipping charges.
During the protest, some freight forwarders who declined to participate were reportedly attacked by their colleagues in an attempt to compel them to join the industrial action.
Confirming the development, Chairman of the Shipping Association of Nigeria (SAN), Boma Alabi, told our Correspondent that the protesting agents were assaulting clearing agents who attempted to process their cargo, using sticks.
According to Alabi:”They’re forcing clearing agents to join them. And attacking those who just want to get on with their business.”
Also, commenting on the development, former National Vice President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, Kayode Farinto, said he was aware of ongoing discussions among the various customs agents’ groups, but noted that the talks eventually broke down hence the protest.
Recall that the leadership of the Nigerian Shippers Council, in collaboration with other stakeholders, approved an upward review of shipping charges, a move strongly opposed by some industry players who argued that they were not adequately consulted during the process.
Also recall that the Nigerian Shippers Council directed all shipping companies to suspend the proposed increase following widespread opposition to the new charges.
