Paris — French Finance Minister Le Maire said he favoured French companies benefiting from high energy prices to contribute directly to help consumers cope with soaring inflation, rather than by implementing a new tax.
Le Maire added that one way to do that was for companies to increase salaries.
Earlier this week, French companies such as TotalEnergies and Negi posted bumper profits as energy companies cashed in on a surge in oil and gas prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – which in turn has led to renewed calls in some quarters for a windfall tax on such companies.
