25 March 2013, Lagos – Nigeria’s organised labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC; and civil society groups have commenced mobilisation for a nationwide protest in April against plans by the government to hike fuel prices.
Their move is a reaction to recent comment by President Goodluck Jonathan to the effect that an increase in fuel prices was imminent in the country.
Specifically, the NLC and TUC have scheduled the nationwide mass protest for April 10.
According to TUC President-General, Peter Esele, the decision for mass protest was taken at the Congress’ National Executive Council meeting.
Oil workers under the aegis of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, also have condemned the proposed increase in fuel price.
PENGASSAN President, Comrade Babatunde Ogun, said: “It is not possible for government to increase fuel price now. There are many unanswered questions, ranging from subsidy claims, refineries, Petroleum Industry Bill and other conditions in our laws. Government need further engagement of all stakeholders on the project.”
