Cape Town — G3-Alliance representatives will be on hand to share the consortium’s success stories and vision of the future of smart grid technology this week at the CTICC in Cape Town during the upcoming Enlit Africa conference and expo, taking place from 16–18 May.

A flagship annual industry event since 2000, Enlit Africa offers more than 5000+ attendees, representing the entire power and energy value chain, from governments, municipalities to large energy users, investors, EPCs, IPPs and start-ups, multiple opportunities to meet, do business and inspire each other, driving energy action into a working plan for the years ahead.

This year, important themes are Africa’s just energy transition and the importance of ensuring that energy access is a central outcome of that transition. The programme will also focus on finance and investment strategies, renewable energy, storage and alternative solutions as well as generation, transmission and distribution.

    Interoperable, multi-vendor implementations
“Using international standards is fundamentally important for distribution system operators (DSOs) to realise interoperable, multi-vendor implementations,” says Leon Vergeer, G3-Alliance General Secretary, “and that is key for reducing supply chain risk and avoiding vendor lock-in. Therefore, a thorough and strong certification program is very important for DSOs. It is the only way to be sure products have correctly implemented the standard and are interoperable with other devices.”

He adds: “G3-Alliance provides proven and robust communication technologies that use the existing powerline infrastructure as well as radio for cost-effective data communication. We have a thorough certification program that has been very successful since the opening of the certification program almost 10 years ago already.”

A consortium created in 2011 to standardize and promote G3 technologies globally, the G3-Alliance counts almost 100 members today that are international key stakeholders of the smart grid ecosystem, including utilities, semiconductor companies, equipment manufacturers and industrial companies.

Visitors can learn more about the G3 certification programme or G3 implementations around the world at the G3-Alliance stand B105 on the Enlit Africa expo floor, and Marc Delandre and Martial Monfort from Enedis/EDF in France will be on hand to share their experience with the successful 36 million G3-PLC smart meters roll-out in France.

As part of the conference programme, Stewart Gebbie, Semitech’s EMEA Sales Director, will talk about the future of smart grid technology in his presentation, “G3-PLC: A Powerful Communication Backbone for the Smart Grid,” on Monday, 16 May at 14h20.

The G3-Alliance is a silver sponsor of Enlit Africa.
