Prof Chinelo Nebo25 November 2013, Abuja – The vandalism of the gas pipeline supplying gas to Okpai power plant in Delta State has resulted in a drop in power supply by 450 megawatt (MW) following the shutdown of the plant at the weekend.

According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) , the development resulted in 450MW reduction in electricity generation since Saturday, November 23 , 2013, when the plant was shut down.

The TCN’s statement which was signed by the general manager, public affairs, Seun Olagunju, however, informed that the unavoidable power rationing which followed the drop in supply will last till Tuesday, November 26, 2013.

“There will be about 450MW reduction in electricity generation from Saturday, 23 to Tuesday, November 26, 2013, due to reported vandalism of gas pipeline supplying gas to Okpai power plant in Delta State, resulting in the shutdown of the power station, and unavoidable power rationing nationwide,” Olagunju said in the statement.

She added that the “TCN is reliably informed that repair work is expected to be completed within three days and Okpai power plant will expectedly, resume generation on Wednesday November , 27, 2013.”

While calling on members of the public to work with the government in protecting installations and facilities meant for the nation’s socio-economic development, the TCN expressed regrets over the inconveniences the power rationing may cause the federal government and all electricity consumers nationwide.
