27 June 2015, Eket – Worried by the deterioration of the only access road to ExxonMobil facility in Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, the State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has directed the contractor handling the Eket-Ibeno road to return to site with effect from June 29, 2015.
Although no reason was given for the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to abandon the site, the governor who was on an inspection tour of the road, weekend expressed shock at the lamentable condition of the road.
“I didn’t know it was this deplorable. We intended to wait till dry season. But I want to plead on behalf of the State Government that effective Monday (June 29); CCECC will return to this site.”
Emmanuel noted that the Eket-Ibeno road was the only access to ExxonMobil facility and the hub of their activities.
He, accordingly called on the ExxonMobil and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to partner with the State government in the intervention process.
“I assure you that State Government will intervene, from Monday CCECC will come back to this site, but I am calling on ExxonMobil and NDDC that they should come to the aid of the community.
“This road leads to the entire facility of ExxonMobil, where they are actually exploring, their storage bank, offices and everything.”
