27 July 2012, Sweetcrude, WARRI—NIGER Delta Youths Against Oppression, NDYAO, based in Escravos, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, has called on the federal and state governments to check the alleged illegal activities of the pipeline surveillance and maritime security personnel on the Oporaza axis of the waterways.
The group, in a statement by its President, Mr. Ofe Nene, alleged that personnel of the security outfit were engaging in vices of all kinds in the pretense of discharging their functions.
He argued that the actions of these workers were capable of threatening the existing peace on the waterways on the Warri-Escravos axis of Delta State and called for a stop to the unwarranted activities.
He said: “It has come to our notice that personnel of the security outfit engaged in “illicit and illegal acts of extortion, intimidation, stealing and deadly threat to lives of community dwellers in Escravos on the Oporaza community area.
“They impede free movement on the waterways by stopping all boats heading to Escravos and forcefully collect money and other valuables from passengers with a threat to sink their boats and throw them into the water if they do not comply, thereby breeding fear, apprehension and undue tension in the area.”
He called for the quick intervention of the relevant authorities to prevent another round of crisis in the state.
