26 August 2012, Sweetcrude, LAGOS – THE Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights, CDWR, says the solution to Nigeria’s perennial fuel crisis lies in reviving local refineries and improvement in national infrastructure.
The group said it supports National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG’s, demands for refineries to be turned around, and roads to be fixed while pipelines should be constructed to link different areas of the country and the railway revitalised.
According to a statement signed by the group’s publicity secretary, Chinedu Bosah, NUPENG should end the ongoing the privatisation and deregulation in the oil industry. Alternatively, the group asked NUPENG to demand the nationalisation of the oil industry under democratic management and control of workers and communities.
CDWR frowned at government’s deliberate policy of keeping the refineries and other basic infrastructure in a state of disrepair thereby allowing for importation of refined petroleum products,in the process, “enriching a section of the ruling elite at the expense of the people.”
