12 August 2013, Monrovia – Liberians are expected to receive a major boost in the supply of electricity to Monrovia and its environs following a recent signing of bilateral agreement between the Governments of Liberia and Japan.
The power plant project will enable homes and businesses to have easy access to more reliable and affordable power supply as the Liberia Electricity Corporation, LEC, endeavours to restore electricity throughout the country following years of civil unrest.
According to a release, this project was made possible as a result of a grant provided by the Japanese Government to Liberia of more than 2 billion Japanese Yen for the construction of a 10 megawatt Heavy Fuel Oil, HFO, Diesel Plant for the LEC.
The exchange of notes between the two governments was signed in Tokyo, Japan.
The budget for the project was apportioned for “Consulting Services” and the procurement, construction, installation, operation and training work. It will also provide line construction vehicles for the Liberia Electricity Corporation Transmission & Distribution, T&D, Department.
The signing ceremony for the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, JICA, 10 MW HFO plant for the Liberia Electricity Corporation was witnessed and signed by Mr. Shahid Mohammad, former Chief Executive Officer and Mr. Joseph T. Mayah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Planning at the Corporation.
Recently, a contract was signed between the Liberia Electricity Corporation and a joint venture of Mitsubishi Corporation and Dia Nippon Construction Consortium as the implementing firm for the 10 MW HFO Diesel power plant project.
