01 March 2014, Lagos — An undisclosed number of residents in the Oke Ado area of Lagos have been arrested for allegedly assaulting electricity workers on duty in the area.
The police alleged that residents allegedly beat the electricity workers as they attempted to disconnect their houses from electricity supply.
Most parts of the community have suffered persistent epileptic power supply in recent time but are still compelled to pay huge bills by the electricity company.
Irked by the development, some residents allegedly ambushed four electricity workers disconnecting houses in the area.
The incident was reported to the police leading to the arrest of some members of the community who took part in the assault of the workers.
Police authorities said those arrested would soon been arraigned in court for assault.
Meanwhile the management of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has lamented the spate of vandalism of its facilities and continuous assault of its workers by members of the public while discharging their duties.
The company’s Assistant General Manager for Public Affairs, Godwin Idemudia, said the company was deeply worried over the daily attacks on both its staff and wanton destruction of facilities over allegations of insufficient power supply.
Idemudia noted that over time, members of the public had continued to vent their anger on the company’s staff and facilities.
