28 July 2016, Lagos—The management of Hudson Trident Training Centre has said the use of its facility will address the problem of capital flight in the country.
The Managing Director of the company, Mr. Lai Are, said this at the inauguration of the facility in Lagos.
He said, “Everyone is aware there is scarcity of foreign exchange as a result of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s policies due to the economic crunch. We are of the view that the use of this facility will go a long way in addressing capital flight.
“Money that would have been expended on maritime training overseas will be saved to meet other pressing needs. The personnel and equipment are here in the country.”
According to Are, the facility provides mandatory and non-mandatory training that complies with international and local standards as well as relevant regulations such as the International Convention of Training, Certification and Watch Keeping for Seafarers 1995 as amended, Safety of Life at Sea Convention, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency requirements, Nigerian maritime and oil and gas industry requirements, the DNV-GL and the Nautical Institute.
He appealed to NIMASA, Nigerian Shippers’ Council and the Nigerian Ports Authority to use the facility to update the knowledge of their workers about the maritime industry manpower requirements.
“The centre undertakes many courses to meet the needs of shipping practitioners such as ship handling, offshore supply vessel manoeuvring, tug handling and dynamic positioning.
“Others are offshore supply vessel seafarer, GMDSS, crane handling, pilotage and tug masters. Nigeria and Nigerians will derive enormous benefits from the use of this facility in the country,” Are said.
