25 August 2015, Lagos – In the past 18 months, the Nigerian Navy (NN), Tuesday revealed that they were able to destroy over 200 illegal refineries, 58 oil barges, 93 large wooden boats and 1,259 auxiliary equipment, as well as effect the arrest of 80 vessels and their crew.
The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Henry Babalola, made this disclosure yesterday at the opening ceremony of the Second Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Conference.
Hosted by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the OPV conference, which is ongoing in Lagos was in partnership with the International Quality Productivity Center (IQPC).
The conference which attracted about 20 countries was themed, ‘Facilitating Cooperation Across Africa and Focusing on Naval System and Coastal Surveillance To Enhance Maritime Security’.
Participants at the event were drawn from global experts in maritime security and naval operations, service chiefs and flag officers from international and African navies.
