Port Harcourt — The Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, NCDMB, has launched its Digitalisation Initiative, NDI, for the South-South and South-East zones, marking a major step in its mission to build a new generation of tech-driven professionals for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
The 18-month programme, unveiled at the Ace Putor Hall, University of Port Harcourt, seeks to equip young Nigerians with digital skills in Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Data Analytics, and Software Development, while fostering innovation and employability within the energy value chain.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Chris Osuji, Manager, Quality Assurance, Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate, said the initiative underscores NCDMB’s determination to align local capacity development with the demands of a fast-evolving digital economy.
“Digital transformation is no longer optional, it’s fundamental to sustaining competitiveness in the oil and gas sector,” Osuji stated.
“Through this initiative, we’re not just training individuals; we’re building a technology-ready workforce capable of driving Nigeria’s industrial future.”
According to him, the NDI is structured across three phases, Exposure to Digital Tools, EDT, Advanced Training, ADT, and Deployment Phase, which will include practical incubation and on-the-job training with industry partners.
He explained that the programme would run concurrently across all six geopolitical zones, beginning with 20 trainees each from the South-South and South-East regions. Participants will receive globally recognized certifications and mentorship from leading technology organisations.
“Our goal is to empower young Nigerians to innovate, create, and compete globally,” Osuji added. “This programme ensures that the future of local content is not only about fabrication and engineering but also about technology, innovation, and knowledge capital.”
The Board reaffirmed that the NDI is part of its broader digital transformation agenda, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s position as a competitive hub for innovation-driven energy development.
With the launch, NCDMB says it is setting the pace for a new wave of digital inclusion and indigenous innovation, designed to future-proof Nigeria’s workforce and enhance productivity across the oil and gas ecosystem
Participants at the event hailed the initiative as a timely intervention, describing it as a bridge between traditional oil and gas operations and the digital economy of the future.
“NCDMB’s investment in digital upskilling will help reposition Nigeria for Industry 4.0,” one participant said. “This is the kind of forward-thinking approach the sector needs to remain globally relevant.”
