Port Harcourt — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has intensified efforts to enhance grid reliability and operational efficiency by engaging key stakeholders on the integration of generating units into the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System, SCADA/EMS, project.
The high-level Stakeholders Engagement Meeting convened representatives from Generation Companies, GenCos, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, the Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO, and other critical players across the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, NESI.
Speaking at the meeting, NERC Acting Chairman Dr. Yusuf Ali emphasized the project’s strategic importance to national power infrastructure.
“This engagement is an important step in ensuring that all generating units are fully aligned with the technical and operational requirements of the SCADA/EMS project. Our collective commitment is essential to delivering a more efficient, reliable, and transparent electricity supply industry,” he said.
Dr. Ali noted that integrating generating units into the SCADA/EMS platform would provide real-time system visibility, improve decision-making, and strengthen grid stability.
“Effective integration is not optional, it is critical for operational transparency and sector growth,” he added.
The session highlighted the current status of the SCADA/EMS implementation, technical requirements for GenCo integration, and the compliance expectations necessary to meet regulatory standards.
Participants discussed challenges affecting integration and explored solutions to ensure seamless coordination across the electricity value chain.
“This initiative positions the Nigerian power sector to achieve higher efficiency and operational resilience. Stakeholder collaboration is key, and we are committed to working together for a stable and transparent grid,” Dr. Ali reiterated.
The engagement reflects NERC’s ongoing mandate to foster a robust, market-driven electricity sector while leveraging technology to enhance service delivery and investor confidence.
With the successful integration of all generating units, the SCADA/EMS project is expected to significantly reduce system losses, prevent blackouts, and support Nigeria’s ambition of reliable and sustainable power supply, boosting economic activity across industrial and commercial sectors.
